The museum island is the oldest museum in Stade and one of the oldest freely accessible open-air museums in Germany.
It is located on part of the fortifications that were built when the Swedes occupied Stade: the so-called Bleicher-Ravelin. The idyllic site, which is within walking distance of the historic town centre, is still completely surrounded by the old moat, the Burggraben.
The estate on the museum island includes an old farmhouse from 1733 with richly decorated brickwork, which still contains the original floor plan and most of the furnishings. A restaurant is housed in a farmhouse typical for the northern German heathlands with a gable from 1641. Also worth seeing are the post mill and a traditional Altl\u00e4nder ornamental gate.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

Before Stade was turned into a Swedish fortress, the so-called B\u00fcrgerbleiche was located between the later K\u00f6nigsmarck bastion and the Gr\u00fcndel bastion: Meadows where the citizens could bleach their washed linen in the sun. The two bastions were erected in 1662. In 1692 to 1694 the Bleicher-Ravelin, now the island, was constructed from the remains of the B\u00fcrgerbleiche meadows.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

Numerous agricultural equipment from past centuries, beehives and a post mill, which originally came from Rethmar, between tall trees and the old half-timbered houses on the island – a walk across the museum island feels like travelling back in time. The Open-Air Museum celebrated its 100th birthday in 2014. Discover the culture and nature of the Altes Land in one of the oldest open-air museums in Germany.
The grounds of the Open-Air Museum are accessible free of charge all year round. From May to September, a tour of the Altl\u00e4nder Haus is offered every second and last Sunday of the month. The tours start at 2.00 pm and last 60 minutes. Private tours can also be booked.
On the last Sunday of every month, weaving and spinning demonstrations are given in the Altl\u00e4nder Haus on the Museum Island. Anyone who is interested in these craft techniques or perhaps needs advice on their own spinning wheel or weaving piece is in good hands here.
Twice a year, on the last Sunday in May and September, the popular island markets take place on the grounds of the Museum Island.
