"Elberadweg" – Elbe Cycle Route

From the Czech Republic to the North Sea

The Elbe Cycle Route has been one of the most popular cycle trails in Germany for years. It winds its way from its source in the Czech Republic to the North Sea estuary in Cuxhaven, always closely following the Elbe. The character of the river and the surrounding landscape varies enormously along the individual sections. The northernmost part (sections A, B and C) of the Elbe Cycle Route runs for around 150 kilometres from the Hanseatic city of Hamburg through the Altes Land region, takes a detour to Stade and then winds its way through Kehdingen towards the North Sea.

The Hanseatic city of Stade is one of the highlights of section B of the route. It runs south of the Elbe between Freiburg and Lühe for around 54 kilometres. This section of the Elbe Cycle Path has a special charm: unlike the more southerly sections, the Elbe is wider here, there are more wide sandy beaches on the banks and the dykes are significantly higher and wider. Also unique to this part of the long-distance cycle route are the islands that rise out of the water and, of course, the sweeping views over the orchards in the Altes Land region.

Elbe Cycle Route Handbook

The Elbe Cycle Route handbook is available in German from the Tourist Information Centre or can be conveniently ordered from the online brochure shop.

On the Elbe Cycle Route to Stade

Coming from Hamburg, we recommend following the signs on the right bank of the Elbe to Wedel/Schulau. Here you can take the Lühe-Schulau Elbe ferry to the nation’s fruit paradise, the Altes Land. The route takes you first along the Elbe and then the river Schwinge to the Hanseatic city of Stade.

The city’s maritime flair is underlined by the picturesque scenery along the route: you reach Stade’s city centre via the new promenade at the harbour Stadthafen. The rest of the route then continues along the other side of the harbour directly to the tourist information office – the ideal starting point for exploring Stade’s historic town centre.

If you cycle towards Stade from the other direction, you will be guided along the Hansestraße to the tourist information centre. After your stay, leave Stade via the waterfront promenade of the Stadthafen.
