Guided tour through the Fortress Grauerort

Fascinating discoveries behind historic walls

To the north-west of Stade’s town centre, close to the village of Abbenfleth, a forest stretches over the marshes that almost reaches the fairway of the river Elbe. Beneath the greenery of the forest, right on the river bank, you can discover the fortress Grauerort with its high ramparts and learn exciting facts about the fort and its peaceful history during the guided tour.

Beneath the forest canopy, directly by the river Elbe, you can see the artillery fort Grauerort. The structure is a typical example of Prussian fortress architecture from the second half of the 19th century. It was built by the Prussians to protect against enemy ships on the Elbe. However, the fortress was never involved in combat operations. Today, the site serves as a backdrop for cultural events and is home to the exhibition “Pangea” as well as a motorhome site.
