Guided tour through the Fortress Grauerort

Fascinating discoveries behind historic walls

To the north-west of Stade’s town centre, close to the village of Abbenfleth, a forest stretches over the marshes. Seen from all around, the woodland on the spit of land pushes up to the waterway of the river Elbe.

Beneath the forest canopy, directly by the river Elbe, you can see the artillery fort Grauerort. The structure is a typical example of Prussian fortress architecture from the second half of the 19th century. It was built by the Prussians to protect against enemy ships on the Elbe. However, the fortress was never involved in combat operations. Today, the site serves as a backdrop for cultural events and is home to the exhibition “Pangea” as well as a motorhome site.
