Kunsthaus Stade

A twofold treasure at the Hanseatic harbour

Kunsthaus temporarily closed

Due to water damage in the building, the Kunsthaus is expected to remain closed until June 2024. Unfortunately, the current exhibition cannot be viewed and events are cancelled.

The Kunsthaus Stade is located in a typical merchant and warehouse building. It is the tallest half-timbered house in the row of buildings on the Wasser West waterfront. Crane beams and warehouse doors on the upper floors remain intact and give the building a unique atmosphere. The impressive façade was renovated in 1667.
High-calibre exhibitions are a guaranteed treat for lovers of the arts. For this reason, the Kunsthaus Stade enjoys an outstanding reputation even beyond the local art community.

The Kunsthaus Stade hosts temporary exhibitions showcasing works by renowned artists. The presentations of recent years featuring paintings by Jonathan Meese and Daniel Richter, Jörg Immendorff, August Macke, Pablo Picasso and Jeanne Mammen have been true crowd-pleasers.

Information on the current exhibition can be found here (German).

Kunsthaus Stade

Art in the warehouse

The building is a striking example of a merchant’s house from the Hanseatic period. The goods were lifted up to the storage hatch with a pulley attached to the outside of the gable storey and stored over several floors. The shipowner or merchant lived on the upper floors of the stately house.

The museum shop

In addition to catalogues and selected publications on current temporary exhibitions, the museum shop at the Kunsthaus Stade offers an extensive selection of literature on regional history as well as historical maps. There is also a wide range of general literature on the permanent exhibitions.
Games, DVDs, small souvenirs, posters and postcards related to the exhibits can be purchased here. A special highlight are the museum bags, which are handmade from the recycled banners from earlier exhibitions in a small workshop in Stade. There are now over 10 different models, from messenger bags, various shoulder bags and shoppers to small storage bags and cases.
