Hamburg
The metropolis on the other side of the Elbe
A stone’s throw away, on the opposite bank of the river Elbe, lies the Hanseatic city of Hamburg. Sightseeing, shopping, museum visits, celebrations, urban adventures, as much as your heart desires, await you within an hour of Stade. Hamburg can be reached comfortably and quickly with the S-Bahn and the HVV regional train. For those who like to be active in nature, combining a cycle tour along the Elbe with a ferry trip on the Lühe-Schulau ferry or the ferries of HADAG guarantees a special Elbe experience while enjoying the fresh air.
"Hamburg - meine Perle"
The metropolis and ‘Pearl of the North’, Hamburg, is characterised by its extraordinary diversity. Rough seas and stiff breezes on the river Elbe meet historic buildings and leading industries. A wide variety of differing cultures can be experienced in the city centre. Countless bridges and waterways remind one of Amsterdam or Venice. In the ‘Portuguese quarter’ you can indulge in culinary delights. With around 1.85 million inhabitants, Hamburg is the second largest city in Germany. A long and eventful urban history has made Hamburg the city it is today. A city of superlatives: the Speicherstadt warehouse district as a World Heritage Site, the Miniatur Wunderland with the largest model railway in the world, the Port of Hamburg as the third largest seaport in Europe…
Hamburg Port Anniversary
The famous Hamburg Port Anniversary takes place every year in May. A huge maritime spectacle that attracts thousands of visitors on and along the river Elbe. Ship parades, tugboat ballet, accompanying cruises, a large fireworks display and much more make up the programme in honour of the Port of Hamburg.
Musical City
Famous musical productions have been stopping off in Hamburg for decades. Mamma Mia!, Sister Act, Aladdin, Dance of the Vampires and Rocky have all paid a visit to Hamburg’s musical theatres. A permanent guest at the theatre on the river Elbe is the musical production of the Disney classic ‘The Lion King’. For 20 years and with over 14 million tickets sold, the story of the lion cub Simba has remained at the Port of Hamburg. Imaginative stage sets, dazzling choreography and musical numbers that touch the heart impress children and adults alike.
Port city
The Port of Hamburg has always been considered the ‘gateway to the world’, a term that is taken literally here. Seafarers set sail from Hamburg as early as the 19th century, and today the world’s largest container ships prepare for their next voyage here. These ‘big ships’ majestically make their way along the river Elbe to and from the North Sea. After Rotterdam and Antwerp, the Port of Hamburg is the third largest seaport in Europe and the largest harbour in Germany. Cargo is stored in the large container terminals, where it is loaded onto other ships and sent on its way. Ships leaving for harbour tours, excursion boats and ferries depart from the jetties.
Miniatur Wunderland
The largest model railway in the world, Miniatur Wunderland, is located in the historic Speicherstadt warehouse district. On around 1,500 square metres, ‘MiWuLa’ offers a small trip around the world. From Hamburg to central Germany, Scandinavia, Monaco and Venice to Rio de Janeiro, it’s just a few steps away. The small model trains run for over 16 kilometres through the lovingly constructed miniature worlds. Numerous details will bring a smile to your face. Miniatur Wunderland is an attraction for the whole family and is rightly regarded as one of Germany’s most popular attractions.
Speicherstadt warehouse district
The Speicherstadt is not only a real eye-catcher, it is also well worth exploring its fascinating history. Hamburg’s Speicherstadt is the largest contiguous warehouse complex in the world and has existed south of the historic town centre on the river Elbe since the late 19th century. Back then, the warehouses were used to store foodstuffs such as coffee and spices, as well as textiles. There are still warehouses here today. Some famous sights such as the Miniatur Wunderland, the German Customs Museum and the Dialogue in the Dark have also been added.
