Paddle trails

Fitness meets history on the water

Sponsored by:

“Paddle trails” is the new magic word in Stade at Burggraben and Schwingelauf. For one, it is a fitness trail on the water and, for another, a signposting of particularly interesting places.

The two signposted trails allow visitors and locals alike to experience Stade in a new way from the water. Starting from the harbour Holzhafen at the Burggraben canal, the trails follow different stations along the Burggraben and Schwinge towards the relics of the hillfort Schwedenschanze over a length of seven kilometres.

The measures that have now been implemented are part of the Hanseatic city’s water tourism concept. The project is subsidised by the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF).

Fitness trail: Active on the board

Those who like it active and challenging can follow the blue signposted fitness trail with the SUP board to 15 stations with exercises for coordination, stability and strength – a new exercise idea surprises you at every station. They vary between tasks that are performed sitting down or on all fours on the board and tasks that require good balance. These include well-known fitness exercises such as push-ups and squats, but also yoga poses such as the downward-facing dog or variations of the warrior pose. For those who prefer something a little more challenging, there is a special “Power tip” at each station.

History trail: Paddling along the city's history

Those travelling down the river Schwinge on a SUP board or by canoe and kayak can explore Stade’s waterways on the wine-red marked History Trail, following in the footsteps of times gone by. Each of the 14 stations shows a historical image from Stade’s eventful past and provides explanations for the historical milestones of the town. From the Mühlenwehr and the Milchbar to the museum island and 11 additional locations, water lovers can learn all about Stade’s past.

Checked the water level yet?

The river Schwinge may only be navigated with a SUP board or canoe/kayak from a minimum water depth of 130 cm/NN at the measuring point. This value corresponds approximately to the required minimum water depth of 40 cm at the lowest entry point. It is therefore important to check the water level before starting the paddle tour. If the water level is in the “green” range, nothing stands in the way of your water adventure.

Good to know

The main access points for stand-up paddlers and canoeists are currently located at “Stade Beach” (SUP Club) and at the Stadeum. These access points are well suited for those travelling by car, as there are plenty of public parking spaces available. There are two further access points at Horststraße and Fred-Watzlawik-Weg.

In order not to harm nature and its inhabitants, there are instructions on the appropriate behaviour on the water along the route. Please take these instructions to heart.

Use the paddle trails at your own risk.

The SUP Club Stade offers a large selection of canoes, kayaks and SUP boards for hire. Please note that the exercises along the Fitness trail can only be done on the SUP board. The History Trail can be comfortably explored by canoe or kayak.
