"Hansemahl" – Hanseatic banquet

The brothers dish out: Labskaus on the day of the Hanseatic League

Stade celebrates the Hanseatic League in the middle of the historic town centre: at the heart of the event is the ‘Stade Hanseatic Banquet’ organised by the brotherhoods. This is a Labskaus meal for everyone: members of the Stade brotherhoods serve the traditional sailors’ dish at benches and tables set up around the waterfront at the old Hanseatic harbour. The proceeds from the event go to a different charitable cause each year.

If you would like to find out more about the Hanseatic era, you can visit the permanent exhibition at the Schwedenspeicher Museum. Here you can learn about the importance and prosperity of Stade as an old Hanseatic city that grew through enterprise and commercial skill.

Labskaus beim Stader Hansemahl

A sailors' feast for shore dwellers

Labskaus is a centuries-old sailors’ dish. Its ingredients were easy to store on ships. The name comes from the English ‘lobs-cou(r)se’, which roughly translates to: ‘food for rough men’. All along the Frisian North Sea coast, throughout northern Germany and Scandinavia, people love this hearty stew, which is popular in several regional variations. Labskaus is made according to a traditional recipe based on potatoes and beetroot with cured meat and herring.
