Monastery & Crypt

Exciting things behind historical walls

Formerly a monastery, the building nestles into the cityscape of the historic town, surrounded by greenery and roses. The St. Johannis Monastery is Stade’s only surviving convent building. Many people will have felt its special atmosphere in the inner courtyard, but the interior of the old and now rather crooked walls usually remains hidden from the public. A tour guide takes her group on the trail of Abbot Albert of Stade, giving her guests an exclusive look behind the historic walls and providing them with fascinating stories about the changing purposes of the old building. The second part of the tour is not for the faint-hearted. The crypt of Archbishop Gottfried of Arnsberg is located beneath the armoury on the Pferdemarkt. It was only discovered there in the mid-1990s and is now open for visitors.
