The Dames of Stade

Entertaining stories about women from Stade

Experience a unique tour of the town and discover the world of Stade’s women. This entertaining tour will reveal some of their fascinating love stories and misfortunes.

The innkeeper Sophie Armster and the mayor’s wife, Mette De Sworen, invite you to join them on a journey through time in which women from Stade’s past are brought to life.

The adventure tour starts with Margarethe Pape, known as Mudder Flint, who moved to Stade in 1883 with an illegitimate son. The spinster Auguste Pape helps the innkeeper Sophie Armster to organise the 1000-year-old stories of the women of Stade. During the tour, the rebel Johanna Borchers and the gymnastics and drawing teacher Katharina Meyer are introduced. At the town hall, the mayor’s wife, Mette de Sworen, takes over the tour and introduces the participants to the independent “Blue Sisters”. These very special women for their time organise themselves, master beer brewing and live as a community of women. Let yourself be whisked away to another world and discover how perhaps not exactly famous, but certainly extraordinary women lived in Stade.
