Museum ship Greundiek
Welcome on board
A floating monument has moored in Stade: the MS “Greundiek” was originally built in 1949 as the “Hermann-Hans” at the Rickmers shipyard in Bremerhaven; the coaster was launched in January 1950.
The Greundiek was one of the first commercial steel ships to be fully through-welded; as a result, not a single row of rivets can be found on the hull and superstructure. The ship was later used by the Grünendeich Maritime School for teaching purposes. For many years, ship mechanics were trained on board.
The original wooden bridges with the old steering position and nautical equipment are historically significant. Some of the compartments of the museum ship are still equipped with the original furniture from the 1950s. As a monument and cultural heritage, the museum ship Greundiek is moored in Stade’s city harbour and can be toured.
Alter Hafen Association
The owner of the former coaster is the “Alter Hafen Stade e.V.” association. The association ensures that Stade’s maritime character is not forgotten and that the harbours retain their importance. In addition to the MS “Greundiek”, the association operates the “Fleetkahn” boats and the information centre on Stade’s harbour history in the wooden crane at the fish market. They are particularly committed to opening up the Hanseatic harbour and making it navigable again.
Maritime landscape of the Lower Elbe
The “Greundiek” is an ambassador for the Lower Elbe Maritime Landscape. She regularly visits other harbours. The diverse maritime heritage of the Lower Elbe region characterises the character of this unique river landscape. In addition to historic harbours, this also includes granaries, cranes, historic ships, lighthouses and attractive sailing and water sports areas.
Excursions & events
The Greundiek is by no means just lying in the harbour. The maritime ambassador of the Hanseatic city of Stade is still fully operational today and sets off on regular trips on the rivers Schwinge and Elbe. In the summer months, excursions with guests are undertaken, which can take them out onto the Elbe or even as far as Kiel. Occasionally, cultural events are also organised on board. The museum ship Greundiek is also available for private celebrations.
