Holiday region ‘Altes Land on the river Elbe’
Adventure and tranquillity south of the river Elbe
Maritime Hanseatic towns, colourful orchards, green expanses, big ships. With its picturesque historic town centre, the Hanseatic city of Stade makes up the heart of the Altes Land holiday region on the river Elbe.
The region invites you on a variety-packed discovery tour along the rivers Este and Lühe, on the Elbe dyke towards Cuxhaven and past pretty little towns, magnificent half-timbered houses and quaint farm shops and cafés. Why not get on your bike and follow the Fruit Route (Obstroute) into the Alte Land?
In the surrounding area, the Stade geest awaits with idyllic stretches of rural countryside and inviting villages. The historic Moorexpress train stops in some of them on its way to Bremen.
Kehdingen, which stretches along the Elbe to the north of Stade as far as the estuary of the river Oste, offers a true spectacle of nature with fields and moorland, dykes and riverside landscapes and is considered an ‘international bird haven’. Trips with the Moorkieker, the Tidenkieker and the Vogelkieker promise exciting and educational hours about flora and fauna.
Tip: At weekends during the season, the Elbe Bike Touring Bus takes pedestrians and cyclists to many destinations in the region. All aboard!
