Stolpersteine – Stumbling Stones

The stories behind the brass plaques

“A person is only forgotten when their name is forgotten,” says artist Gunter Demnig.

He commemorates the victims of the Nazi era by placing so-called Stolpersteine – 10 x 10 centimetre stones with brass memorial plaques – in the pavement in front of their last chosen place of residence. Stolpersteine have now been installed in over 500 places in Germany and in several European countries.

Demnig placed the first Stolpersteine in Stade in 2009. Today, 23 Stolpersteine can be found here in total. The last two Stolpersteine were added in 2021.

The city tour leads to individual Stolpersteine and other memorials around Stade and tells the life stories of former Stade citizens. As Jews, Sinti, Roma, Communists and Christians, those murdered lived in and were crucial parts of Stade’s society.

The stories behind the Stolpersteine can now also be discovered online or with an app.
