Agathenburg Castle

Cultural enjoyment with a unique atmosphere

Agathenburg Castle, which was built in 1655 by the Swedish general Hans Christoph von Königsmarck, is where his granddaughter, the beautiful Countess Aurora, spent her youth.

The stately architecture, an enchanted garden and the location with a view of the Elbe Valley make the castle the gem of the region. The permanent historical exhibition gives visitors an impressive insight into the baroque life of the Königsmarcks.

Culture at Agathenburg Castle

The castle is both a historical site and a cultural venue with changing exhibitions of contemporary art, concerts and book readings. Some of the events take place in the former stables nearby, which can also be hired as a venue for private events.

Splendour and demise

Let yourself be whisked away into the world of the Baroque: the castle stages the history of the rich and powerful aristocratic family in an imaginative way. From the construction of the castle in Agathenburg to the “Sex and Crime” stories of subsequent generations, the exciting lives of the von Königsmarcks are revealed.

A short break in the castle café

Whether in the “Niedersachsenzimmer” with its traditional furniture from the Altes Land, in the foyer with its historic tiled stove or on the terrace with its magnificent view over the Elbe Valley – a break in the castle café rounds off every visit to Agathenburg Castle. Delicious cakes are served at the weekend while pies and muffins are on the menu during the week.
The castle offers a range of interesting organised packages for groups. For instance, a guided tour followed by a coffee break.
A walk through the castle gardens is also invigorating and refreshing. There are winding paths and a romantic little island to discover.

Aurora of Königsmarck, if you please...

A strong woman is the focus of this guided tour: Maria Aurora of Königsmarck was one of the most important women of the Baroque era. In her birthplace of Stade and at Agathenburg Castle, the tour guide will take you on a search for clues in historical dress.
Maria Aurora of Königsmarck, whose grandfather had Agathenburg Castle built, was one of the most interesting women of the Baroque era. Firstly, the tour guide takes visitors through the countess’s birthplace, Stade. Here she explains the centre of power at the former Sande, the birthplace of Aurora of Königsmarck and the fortifications built at that time, the remains of which still surround the historic town of Stade today. After a break, the tour continues at Agathenburg Castle. There, the tour guide slips into the role of Maria Aurora of Königsmarck and welcomes the participants in historical dress.
