Stade reads
For the love of reading
The registered association Stade reads regularly organises a wide range of events to generate interest. The activities take place under a wide variety of mottos, for example ‘Attention, reading endangers stupidity’, ‘Reading books, finding treasures’, ‘The land and its people’.
The many events organised by the association include readings with local authors in schools, retirement homes, kindergartens, in shop windows of Stade’s retail outlets and other exciting locations such as the courtroom of the Stade district court or the vault of the Sparkasse Stade-Altes Land bank.
The association
The forerunner of the registered association Stade reads is an initiative of the parents’ council of the city of Stade, which started campaigns to promote reading and established contacts with various community groups for many Stade schools.
With the support of parents, schools, local writers, many sponsors, the Sparkasse banks, the public library, the district youth musical school and the Stade Tageblatt newspaper, the first ever Stade reads event was held in 1997. It became clear that such events should be repeated. Thus, the Stade reads association was founded in 1999 in order to be able to organise future events more effectively and provide better financial support. The association is officially recognised as a non-profit organisation.
This small success story, that began in 1997, was held under the provocative title ‘Attention, reading endangers stupidity’.
Then as now, the organisers pursued one goal: to promote reading, especially for children. According to the organisation’s statutes, reading is the basis of communication.
Fun for readers over the summer holidays
During the summer holidays, well-known people from Stade regularly give open-air readings in German for young bookworms on the ‘Erleninsel’ playground.
