Hiking & pilgrimages

Through the region on foot

The natural landscapes surrounding Stade are perfect for both casual and extensive hiking tours. The region is a paradise for anyone who enjoys exploring far away from traffic noise. Take time to breathe deeply and unwind. In addition to the hiking trails along forests, rivers and lakes, Stade is also a great place for pilgrims. With the Way of St James and the Via Romea Germanica, nothing stands in the way of a spiritual journey on foot. “With body and soul” you can also cycle along the Mönchsweg.

On well-maintained paths, you cycle past grain fields, green meadows and marshland, through orchards and forests. Small villages with historical charm and enchanting thatched half-timbered houses await you along the way, where farm shops and cafés invite you to stay a while.

The Alte Land in particular has become increasingly popular due to numerous mentions in novels and films. In April and May, northern Europe’s largest contiguous orchards are transformed into a sea of blossom and attract visitors from all over the world.

The Kehdinger Land stretches out to the north-west of Stade between the Elbmarsch and the Hochmoor – green, wide, flat as a flounder. Take long walks with stunning panoramic views. A notable highlight is the Elbe island of Krautsand with its white sandy beach, which can be reached by taking a long walk along the dyke.
