The 2024 line-up
Give it a listen
Von Wegen Lisbeth
The Berlin quintet Von Wegen Lisbeth took advantage of the pandemic, locked themselves in their rehearsal room, reminisced about their sold-out tour and returned to the music business with a new album. The Berlin hitmakers perform 13 new songs and musically, they leave all doors open. They play the music they like: between the melancholic and the danceable pop songs, Von Wegen Lisbeth are a permanent fixture in the German-speaking music scene. They are regarded as one of the best German-language live bands and, with songs such as ‘Wenn du tanzt’, have also made the leap into mainstream radio – a balancing act that few bands can master.
Olli Schulz
Olli Schulz is a storyteller with music in his heart. The all-rounder of the German media world feels at home both backstage and on stage – he has long since made the transition from stagehand to musician. With a pinch of melancholy and a great deal of sensitivity for life in all its facets, his latest album, ‘Vom Rand der Zeit’, lands unobtrusively yet emphatically at the top of the national album charts. Lyrically, the singer-songwriter always keeps his feet on the ground and his head immersed in the poetry of everyday life – from the stage to the edge of time and back again.
Dilla
Dilla is currently taking the music scene by storm. In no time at all, the young musician made the leap from the study hall to her first own and sold-out tour this year. Since then, ‘Dilla’ has been the talk of the town across all genres: she performs at rap festivals on Fridays, indie pop festivals on Saturdays and techno festivals on Sundays – it’s almost impossible to assign her to one musical genre.
Berq
The promising musician Berq is a bright star in the newcomer sky. The young streaming star is blessed with an extraordinary talent for profound lyrics and haunting melodies. This enabled him to quickly cast a spell over young TikTok users and use the huge streaming success of his track ‘Echo’ as a springboard for a career on the big stages of the German festival scene.
Zartmann
The music career of Berlin musician Zartmann, whose extraordinary music cannot be categorised into any known genre, has developed virtually unchecked. The artist plays with a skilful combination of opposites: Rap and vocals, new wave and pop or indie rock and ballad. A suitable term was quickly found: Berlin indie rap. His lyrics speak to the young generation from the heart and are reminiscent of the melancholy lyrics of AnnenMayKantereit. The newcomer combines soulful pop sounds with indie rock, which he infuses with urban influences and a punk attitude.
Soffie
The 24-year-old Soffie does what women in German indie pop have not risked to do for a long time: With bold beats and even bolder vocals, she makes room for herself and everything she stands for. She allows herself to be what she has always been accused of being. She is too loud and dramatic. Now she is proud of it and that is precisely what her performances and songs reflect. Another thing is evident in her lyrics: Soffie’s thoughts are intense and complex. In her German lyrics, she looks inwards and creates a space in which there is room to be emotional and dance at the same time. One phrase always comes first: “The world is so much more fun when you allow yourself to live it in fortissimo (ff).”
BERQ
Strolling and sprinting. Dwelling and departing. Melancholic, but always looking forward – contrasts run like a red thread through the work of the Hamburg indie/dreampop band Scotch & Water. The four-piece ensemble skilfully plays with tempo changes and different perspectives. They appeal to vinyl lovers of the first hour, witnesses of the new wave revival of the early 2000s and children of the new millennium. Scotch & Water weave influences ranging from Fleetwood Mac and Arcade Fire to Bon Iver and The War on Drugs into multi-faceted and complex soundscapes. Shortly after the band was founded and without a release of their own, they found themselves on the stages of the Reeperbahn Festival and had their first tour experiences in Canada. While listening to Scotch & Water, you can travel through Canada, experience urban Hamburg, lose your thoughts in the distance or simply look up at the ceiling on your carpet at home.
Bosse
It’s hard to imagine the German-speaking music scene without Bosse. Great chart toppers from Bosse’s pen such as ‘Der letzte Tanz’, ‘Schönste Zeit’ and ‘So oder so’ are lined up next to TOP 1 albums. Skilful wordplay, lightness and an extraordinary knack for harmonies and rhythm characterise the artist and turn songs into masterpieces. Stylistically, Bosse moves between breezy summer songs, thoughtful reflections and touching statements. This successful mix quickly brought Bosse to the big stages of well-known festivals such as Rock am Ring, Hurricane or Deichbrand and now to the MAMF in Stade.
Husten
In the midst of musical complexity, the band Husten tells stories. Consisting of Gisbert zu Knyphausen, Moses Schneider (producer of Tocotronic, Beatsteaks, Olli Schulz and many more) and the thin man, Husten have become a kind of superband outside the mainstream. Since their formation in 2017, they have already released four EPS. Their first album ‘aus allen Nähten’, which includes a duet with Sophie Hunger, will be released on 13 May.
In their musical complexity, Husten can hardly be labelled as belonging to a specific genre. Their common thread is most likely the telling of stories.
