Museum "Schwedenspeicher"
Experience the history of the Hanseatic League up close
Stade, once a flourishing Hanseatic city, fell under Swedish rule at the end of the Thirty Years’ War. Evidence of this 67-year era still characterises the cityscape today. One such example is a baroque brick building on the Old Harbour – the Schwedenspeicher Museum.
With the 41 metre long, 16 metre wide and almost 20 metre high building, the Swedish occupiers have left behind an architectural monument.
In order to ensure supplies for the Swedish administration and troops, a warehouse was needed. Although one was built in 1660, it did not fulfil the requirements. And so the building was demolished. A new construction project was initiated after the administration obtained land at the harbour in 1690 to build the Schwedenspeicher there.
The Museum
Created to supply the Swedish garrison, the Schwedenspeicher is now a museum that impressively displays the impressive history of the town of Stade, the importance of the Hanseatic League and the prehistory and early history of the Elbe-Weser region.
The ground floor houses an exciting permanent exhibition on the town’s history with a large multimedia model that highlights the most important episodes in Stade’s development. The finds from the Stade harbour basin, which are renowned throughout Europe, reflect the long history of the town and are presented in a unique installation.
A large exhibition on the Hanseatic period has moved into the first floor of the former warehouse building. In five themed areas, the history of the Hanseatic League becomes a fascinating experience for visitors.
Alternating high-quality temporary collections enrich the museum’s exhibition programme. The focus lies on archaeological and medieval subjects that tie in with the Hanseatic history of the city and the extensive finds from the permanent prehistoric exhibition on the first floor.
