Grauerort Fortress

Peaceful fortress under a green coat

The impressive Grauerort fortress is located north-west of Stade, near Abbenfleth.
The fortress was built by the Prussians between 1869 and 1879 to protect against enemy ships on the Elbe, but was never used for any military battles. Today, the fortress is a popular venue for cultural events.
With the help of a dedicated voluntary organisation, Grauerort has become a popular visitor attraction. In addition to exciting exhibitions, guests can enjoy delicious cakes from the small fortress café.
Motorhome travellers get their money’s worth in the side courtyard of the fortress. A cosy RV pitch with an adventurous character was set up here in 2020.

Historische Festung Grauerort

Historic walls on the River Elbe

The raised fortress at Grauerort is a typical example of Prussian fortress architecture from the second half of the 19th century. The bastion with its hexagonal ground plan nestles against the Elbe embankment, which is made up of a 10 metre high earth wall. Towards the Elbe, the ramparts are casemated. A bridge marks the entrance to the fortress leading through a hollow passageway into the inside of the fort.

Sleeping beauty

Due to the invention of new weaponry, at the time the fortress was necessary for the protection of Hamburg and the river Elbe. However, it was never involved in hostilities. Later, the fort fell into oblivion and was left abandoned for more than 50 years. With the help of a dedicated association, it was reawakened as an attractive sightseeing attraction.
