"Moorexpress"

The legend of the Teufelsmoor

Off on an extraordinary discovery tour into a bygone era… During the summer months, the historic train runs from Stade through the Teufelsmoor bog via Worpswede to Bremen and back. Of course, you may get out for a walk at any stop. There are many opportunities to get off the train for the sights and natural beauty along the route. The railway line through the countryside between the rivers Elbe and Weser was built in 1909. The Moorexpress was the first land-based means of transport to cross the Teufelsmoor at the beginning of the 20th century. Today, the Moorexpress is once again travelling along its traditional route.
Today, the term ‘express’ sounds more like an endearing exaggeration. But when this railway connection was created, the Torfkahn barge was regarded as the benchmark for speed on the moor.

Good to know

The Moorexpress operates from May to the end of September.

The train crew serves drinks such as beer from the area, Jan Torf bitter, piccolos, soft drinks, water, salted pretzels, peanuts, crisps and gummy bears. Each carriage has an original-style toilet with a view of the railway track.

The Moorexpress can easily be combined with a cycle tour. The signposted cycle path ‘From the Teufelsmoor to the Wadden Sea’ connects Stade with Bremen and runs parallel to the railway line. The bike ticket costs 4.00 euros and there is an extra compartment for bikes. Bicycles must be booked in advance.
