Stade's "Kunstkudder"

A floating work of art

In summer 2023, the oldest preserved historic Alster barge from Hamburg moved to Stade. In the historic Hansehafen harbour, the beautifully painted boat will form a colourful contrast to the picturesque ensemble of the harbour basin, half-timbered houses and Schwedenspeicher warehouse. The Alster barge – originally an 18 metre long, flat-bottomed, motorless barge – will be permanently moored on the quay wall in front of the Schwedenspeicher, where it will serve various purposes in addition to being a visual eye-catcher.

It will be home base of the art scholarship of the same name and will serve as a residence and studio for an artist for two months of the year in late summer. For the remaining nine months of the year, the barge will be available for events and can be booked by guests as an overnight accommodation. A catering service is also being planned. It is part of the “Hansehafen reactivation” project as part of the “City centre perspective” programme, for which the Hanseatic City of Stade has acquired funding.

Open Ship on the "Kunstkudder"

Saturday, 27 July, from 11 am to 11 pm

The “Kunstkudder” will open its hatch to the public once again on Saturday, 27 July, before it is available for booking as an extraordinary accommodation. A colourful supporting programme with a memory game, clown and musical entertainment completes the event.

A special place to spend the night

The houseboat will impress you with its rustic charm and tasteful interior design. Everything here makes you feel at home and ensures you have an unforgettable time in your floating home. In addition to a small hallway with a cloakroom, there is a cosy living room with a long sideboard, sofa and dining table – which can be converted into a second bedroom at night – a small bathroom and a kitchen area. The sleeping area can be reached via a small staircase and has two large windows so that you can see the sky from your bed. Warm wood tones and cosy accessories invite you to relax and unwind, while the shaded beach chairs on the sun deck offer a wonderful view of the picturesque backdrop of the Fischmarkt.

The art scholarship

The special location of the Kunstkudder right next to the Schwedenspeicher museum is to be used by artists to live and work for two months of the year. It is intended to serve as a place of inspiration and research. However, the ship also offers a wide range of spatial possibilities for practical work. In consultation with the Stade museums, their workshops may also be used as studios. A kiln, printing presses and other equipment are available there.
So there are many opportunities to actively and intensively shape those two months in Stade. In terms of subject matter, there are no strict requirements associated with the scholarship, although the work may also make reference to the place of residence.

At the end of the residency or possibly already during it as a work in progress, works can be exhibited in the town hall of the Hanseatic city of Stade. A printing cost subsidy of up to €1,500 can also be used to support the production of a publication as part of the scholarship.

A monthly allowance of €1,500 is provided for living expenses during the residency. The use of the “Kunstkudder” as a residential ship is included free of charge in the scope of the scholarship. Applicants should be willing to actively participate in public relations work during their stay, including social media.

Please note: The application deadline for 2024 has already expired.

Applications, which should include a letter of motivation with initial ideas for the content of the residency and, of course, a CV and meaningful insights into previous work, can be submitted by email by 1 April 2024 to: kunstkudder@museen-stade.de
