Stade's "Kunstkudder"

Spend the night on the houseboat at the Hansehafen

If you are looking for a special location for an overnight stay on a houseboat or a party on the water, look no further than the historic Hansehafen in the picturesque town centre of Stade: in the summer of 2024, the oldest preserved Alster barge from Hamburg was converted into a fully furnished modern holiday home in the heart of Stade.

The houseboat can be booked all year round as an extraordinary place to stay overnight and is available for small private events.

In the historic Hanseatic harbour, the artist-designed houseboat called ‘Kunstkudder’ is a colourful contrast to the picturesque scenery around the harbour basin with its half-timbered houses and the historic Schwedenspeicher. The Kunstkudder – originally an 18 metre long flat-bottomed barge – is permanently moored on the quay wall in front of the Schwedenspeicher Museum.

A special place to spend the night

Dreaming under a starry sky: the Kunstkudder is a houseboat whose rustic charm and tasteful interior design are sure to win you over. It has everything you need to feel at home and have an unforgettable time on the water. In addition to a small hallway with a coat rack, there is a cosy living room with a long bar, couch and dining table – which can be converted into a second bedroom at night – a small bathroom and a kitchen area. The berth can be accessed via a small staircase. Here, two large windows allow you to gaze up at the sky from your bed. Warm wood tones and cosy accessories welcome you to enjoy and unwind, while the wicker beach chairs on the sun deck promise a magnificent view of the picturesque Fischmarkt in Stade.

The art scholarship

The Kunstkudder also serves as a base for an art scholarship of the same name.
The Kunstkudder’s special location right next to the Schwedenpeicher museum is available for artists to live and work on for two months of the year. The ship serves as a place to find inspiration and conduct research. But it also offers a variety of spatial possibilities for practical work. In addition, the workshops of the Stade Museums can be used upon request. A kiln, printing presses and other equipment are available.
There are many possibilities to make the two months in Stade active and intensive. There are no strict guidelines for the content of the scholarship, although the work may also refer to the place of residence.
Works can be exhibited in the town hall of the Hanseatic city of Stade either at the end of the stay or during it as a work in progress. A monthly allowance of 1500 Euro is provided for living expenses during the stay. In addition, the production of a publication as part of the scholarship can be supported by a printing cost subsidy of up to 1500 Euro.
Use of the Kunstkudder as a residence is included in the scholarship at no extra cost. Recipients should be willing to actively participate in public relations work as part of their stay, including on social media.
The Alster barge is part of the ‘Reactivation of the Hanseatic Port’ project, which is part of the ‘Perspective City Centre’ programme, for which the Hanseatic City of Stade has acquired funding.

Please note: the application deadline for 2024 has already passed.

Applications, including a letter of motivation with initial ideas for the content of the stay, as well as a CV and meaningful insights into the applicant’s previous work, can be submitted by 1 April 2024 to
