Gallery Hahnentor
Art behind historic half-timbered walls
The name Hahnentor for the historic passageway was derived from the ‘Hahnensitz’, the flat above the gateway. According to the inscription, the eaves house dates back to 1658, when the Hahnentor connected the historic town centre with today’s Kalkmühlenstraße and was the shortest route from Stade Fortress to the bastions. The gateway survived the great town fire unscathed and still shines in its full historic glory today.
In 2022, a small art gallery, the Hahnentor Gallery, moved into the historic building next to the Hahnentor. Changing exhibitions and the works of various artists from the region are on the menu. With the gallery, owner Rüdiger Munderloh has realised a long-cherished dream. His own works, Stade and its surroundings in watercolour, are integrated into the programme throughout the year.
The Kunstverein Stade e. V.
Since its formation in 1989, the Kunstverein Stade e.V. has been active in the field of fine arts in the Hanseatic city of Stade. It has set itself the task of encouraging public interest in the visual arts and sees itself as a mediator between artists and the public. Each exhibition is seen as an experiment, which the organisation is happy to take on. Painting, contemporary art, experimental art, photography, sculpture, objects and installations are exhibited here.
The Kunstpunkt Schleusenhaus art centre gives well-known artists the space they need to present their work. Exhibiting works by as yet unknown talents is also of great importance to the association.

The Hahnentor Gallery is located on the corner of Steile Straße and Kalkmühlenstraße in the historic Hahnentor.
