Baumhaus museum
An inspired collection
Today, the ‘Berg’ private collection of items from Stade dating back several centuries is on display in the Baumhaus at the Hansehafen harbour. It consists of artefacts, documents and photos and was established by Hans-Jürgen Berg from Stade over a period of more than 50 years. The private museum offers a fascinating insight into the metamorphosis of the town and the everyday life of the people of Stade over the last three centuries in a very small space. The founder and operator of the museum himself is available to answer questions and can tell you a lot about the history of Stade.

The Baumhaus museum and its history
The name Baumhaus refers to the historical use of the building. It was the harbour room of the Baumschließer or Baumschreiber, harbour master and supervisor. This person had the task of collecting customs duties and not allowing any ship to enter the harbour carrying beer or wine without permission from the council. It was also forbidden to export goods from Stade by water without paying customs duties. In earlier times, the Baumschließer used a large tree (Baum) to close or open the entrance to the Hanseatic harbour at the Fischmarkt.
The first Baumhaus in Stade was built around 1600. It was significantly larger than the two that followed and was destroyed in the great town fire of 1959. The second and third Baumhäuser were repeatedly rebuilt in the same place.
Today’s third Baumhaus was built in 1773/1774. Before the emergence of steam navigation, the building was a meeting point for travellers going to Hamburg and Glückstadt. They were taken from the jetty at the Baumhaus to the ferry. The harbour office was housed here until 1947.
Today, the building is a protected monument. It has been a privately organised museum since 1973.
